Puerto Rico, over the past five years, has been hit by Hurricane Maria, earthquakes, COVID and now Hurricane Fiona. For many people, these are potentially traumatic events. On a mental level, a traumatic event is one that manages to undermine a person’s mental health, causing a range of symptoms, such as: nightmares, intense fear of remembering what happened, vivid and frightening images of the event, avoidance behavior, among others. These experiences have a strong potential to destabilize a person with depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder.
