Newcastle United’s Summer Signing Odysseas Vlachodimos Already Looks Out of Place at St. James’ Park
Eddie Howe’s men had a busy summer transfer window, bringing in new faces to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. However, one signing already looks like he won’t be a part of Newcastle United’s long-term plans.
Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos was a shock arrival at St. James’ Park, with many fans left wondering what Newcastle were thinking. A £20million move from Nottingham Forest, where he only made seven appearances, was a surprise to say the least.
But what’s even more surprising is that Vlachodimos has already been told he’s not part of the first-team plans at Newcastle. Despite being touted as the club’s new No.1, the Greek international has failed to make an appearance for the Magpies this season.
According to a recent report from The Athletic, Newcastle weren’t even particularly keen on signing Vlachodimos in the first place. However, the move was completed as part of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR), with the sale of Elliot Anderson going towards the £20million fee.
It seems like a case of "horses for courses" at Newcastle, with Vlachodimos left feeling like a square peg in a round hole. He’ll be determined to fight his way through the ranks and prove himself worthy of challenging first-choice keeper Nick Pope, but it’s tough to see him becoming a regular fixture at St. James’ Park.
This raises questions about Newcastle’s recruitment process and whether they’ve learned from past mistakes. Only time will tell if Vlachodimos will be able to turn his Newcastle career around.
