MLS Shake-Up: Three New Faces & New No.1

MLS Power Rankings: The Top Three Take Center Stage

As the league takes a brief hiatus for Leagues Cup 2024, we’re taking a closer look at the recent performances of the top 10 teams in the MLS Power Rankings. This week’s shakeup has seen three new entrants join the fray, while the reigning champions continue to dominate.

10. Vancouver Whitecaps (New Entry)

The Whitecaps have been on a six-match unbeaten streak, with their only loss coming against the Galaxy. While their defense still needs work, their attacking prowess is undeniable. If they can tighten up at the back, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the Western Conference.

9. New York Red Bulls (New Entry)

The Red Bulls’ 3-1 win over Cincinnati was a statement of intent. With their star-studded lineup, they have the potential to string together a few wins and make a push for the playoffs. However, consistency is key, and they’ll need to find a way to maintain their form.

8. Portland Timbers (Down from 5)

The Timbers have started to slow down after their blistering summer run. A 2-1 loss to the Galaxy and a poor defensive display against RSL have seen them drop out of the top five. However, their attacking trio of Daryl Dike, Yimmi Chara, and Sebastian Blanco remains one of the most feared in the league.

7. Colorado Rapids (New Entry)

The Rapids have been up and down all season, but their recent victory over RSL has seen them rise up the rankings. With a talented young squad and a knack for coming from behind, they’re a team to watch in the Western Conference.

6. Real Salt Lake (No Change)

RSL have been the beneficiaries of inconsistency around them, but they still have the talent to contend. If they can sort out their defensive issues, they’ll be back in the mix for the playoffs.

5. FC Cincinnati (Down from 3)

The Cincinnati slump continues, with losses to Charlotte and New York Red Bulls. When fit, they’re a formidable team, but they’ll need to get their stars back on the pitch to make a push for the playoffs.

4. LA Galaxy (Up from 7)

The Galaxy have been a joy to watch, with their attacking trio of Riqui Puig, Gabriel Pec, and Joseph Paintsil causing chaos for opposing defenses. With their form improving, they’re a team to watch in the Western Conference.

3. Columbus Crew (Down from 1)

The Crew have stumbled recently, drawing and losing in the space of four days. However, they’re still the favorites to win MLS Cup, and a few wins will see them back in the mix for the Supporters Shield.

2. Inter Miami (Up from 4)

Miami have excelled in recent weeks, with a young and talented squad stepping up to fill the void left by absentees like Leo Messi and Luis Suárez. With their superstars set to return, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.

1. LAFC (No Change)

The Black and Gold have recovered nicely from their recent loss to Columbus, with a draw against RSL and a win over Seattle. With their talent and depth, they’re still the team to beat in MLS.
