MLS Power Rankings: The New Entrants Shake Up the Top 10
The MLS season is heating up, and with Leagues Cup 2024 on the horizon, we’re taking a look back at the last two matchdays and shaking up our top-10 power rankings. From Vancouver’s impressive attack to LAFC’s recovery, we’re diving into the latest news and analysis.
10. Vancouver Whitecaps
The Whitecaps have been on a roll, losing only once in six consecutive MLS games. Their attack is firing on all cylinders, but they need to tighten up their defense to compete with the best. With their current form, they can definitely hold their own against the top teams in the West.
9. New York Red Bulls
The Red Bulls made a statement with a 3-1 win over Cincinnati, showcasing their credentials. If they can string together a few wins, they might just earn a home playoff game. And let’s be honest, their goal-scoring has been nothing short of spectacular.
8. Portland Timbers
The Timbers have slowed down after their blistering start to the summer. A big win over Real Salt Lake was followed by a disappointing defensive performance against the Galaxy. However, with one of the most potent attacking trios in MLS, Phil Neville’s side will continue to cause problems for opponents.
7. Colorado Rapids
The Rapids have shown flashes of brilliance, but their inconsistency is a concern. A superb win over RSL in the Rocky Mountain Cup has earned them a spot in our rankings. If they can find consistency, they can definitely contend with the best teams in the West.
6. Real Salt Lake
RSL have benefited from others’ inconsistency, but they need to address their recent defensive issues. When fit, they’re a force to be reckoned with, but for now, they’re stuck in mid-table mediocrity.
5. FC Cincinnati
The Cincinnati slump continues, with defeats to Charlotte, New York Red Bulls, and Chicago. When fit, they can dominate any opponent, but it’s hard to see them recovering from their recent slump.
4. LA Galaxy
The Galaxy have been one of the most entertaining teams in MLS, and their attacking trio of Riqui Puig, Gabriel Pec, and Joseph Paintsil is a match for any defense. They’ve impressed with wins over Colorado and Portland, and they’re starting to look like a serious contender.
3. Columbus Crew
The Crew are still the favorites to win MLS Cup, but their recent form has been patchy. A draw and a loss in four days will do little to dent their confidence, but they need to get back on track to challenge for the Supporters Shield.
2. Inter Miami
Miami have excelled in recent weeks, thanks to their young players covering for the absent Leo Messi and Luis Suárez. They’re looking like a force to be reckoned with, and with their superstars set to return, they might just break away from the pack in the Supporters Shield race.
1. LAFC
After a hiccup against Columbus, LAFC have recovered nicely with a draw against Real Salt Lake and a win over Seattle. They’re back to their best, and with their current form, they’re the team to beat.
