MLS Power Rankings: Messi-less Miami stays on top, eyes points record

MLS Power Rankings: The Week in Review

The MLS season is heating up, and it’s time to take a look at the latest power rankings. Our rankings are based on a combination of key season statistics, recent performance, Opta computer ratings, and our writers’ observations. Let’s dive in and see how the teams fared this week.

The Climbers

  • Inter Miami: The Herons are on a roll, picking up points at a record clip. Their big win over the Chicago Fire launched them up to 2.19 points per game, putting them on pace for 74 points. That’s just one point shy of the current MLS record.
  • Cincinnati: The Orange and Blue flexed their muscles with a 4-1 win over CF Montreal. It’s been a tough month for Cincy, but this win should give them some much-needed momentum.
  • Colorado Rapids: The Rapids were perfect in Frisco, snatching three goals from FC Dallas. They’re still in the hunt for a top-four seed in the West.

The Sliders

  • LAFC: The Black and Gold were shredded by the Houston Dynamo, dropping them to 3.15 points per game. They still have a strong squad, but they need to get back on track.
  • Austin FC: The Verde and Black had a tough day at the office, losing 3-0 to Nashville SC. They’re still finding their footing in the league.
  • Toronto FC: The Reds couldn’t hang with D.C. United, losing 2-0. They’re still searching for their first win of the season.

The Strugglers

  • San Jose Earthquakes: The Quakes are having a tough season, and it doesn’t look like things are going to get better anytime soon. They lost 2-1 to Minnesota United and continue to look like the worst team in MLS.
  • Montreal Impact: The Impact are struggling to find their footing, allowing nine goals in two games. They need to get their defense sorted out if they want to turn their season around.

The Ones to Watch

  • LA Galaxy: The Galaxy are still finding their rhythm without Riqui Puig. When they get on the same page, though, watch out.
  • D.C. United: The Black-and-Red are looking to build on their win over Toronto FC. They have a tough schedule ahead, but they’re capable of making a run.
