Owen Spills the Tea: No Contact with Shearer Since 2019
It’s been five long years since Michael Owen and Alan Shearer last spoke, and it’s all thanks to a social media fallout that started with Owen’s autobiography ‘Reboot’ in 2019. The two former Newcastle United teammates have been on the outs ever since, and it’s a rift that shows no signs of healing anytime soon.
Owen and Shearer’s falling out began when Owen claimed in his book that Shearer blamed him for Newcastle’s relegation from the Premier League in 2009. Owen wrote that Shearer, who was in charge of the team at the time, failed to examine his own shortcomings and instead blamed Owen for the team’s struggles.
Shearer didn’t take kindly to Owen’s accusations, and he responded by posting a clip of Owen saying that he hated playing for Newcastle and couldn’t wait to retire. Shearer also took a swipe at Owen’s lucrative contract, saying that he was earning £120,000 a week while playing for the Magpies.
Owen hit back, claiming that Shearer wasn’t as loyal to Newcastle as he seemed. He also brought up a previous incident where Shearer was close to signing with Liverpool, but ultimately decided to stay with Newcastle.
The two former teammates haven’t spoken since, and Owen recently confirmed that they’ve had no contact in years. In a recent interview with DAZN Bet, Owen said, "I haven’t spoken to Alan Shearer since he criticised my book, no. Alan works at the BBC and I work on other channels, so we rarely cross paths. I would say hello and shake his hand, things like that, but no we haven’t spoken since then."
It’s clear that the feud between Owen and Shearer is far from over, and it’s a shame that two of Newcastle’s greatest players can’t seem to put their differences aside. As the old saying goes, "you can’t have your cake and eat it too," and it seems that Owen and Shearer are stuck in a never-ending cycle of bitterness and resentment.
