Messi and Suárez Lead the Way as MLS MVP Contenders
The 2024 MLS season has been marked by incredible performances, but two players stand out among the rest: Inter Miami CF’s Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez. With the release of the complete list of nominees for the MLS MVP award, these two superstars have taken the top spot for a reason.
An Injury-Plagued Season for Messi
Although Messi has only played 18 league matches this season due to injury, the forward has still managed an impressive 17 goals and 15 assists. What’s more, he has only missed a handful of games, with the occasional benching to rehabilitate a right ankle injury, which has seen him relegated to the sidelines for about two months. Still, he’s tied for fourth place on the Golden Boot standings, a testament to his incredible talent and goal-scoring prowess.
Suárez Adjusts Quickly to MLS Life
On the other hand, Suárez has fit in seamlessly to his first ever MLS season. Since joining Inter Miami CF on July 15, he has recorded 18 goals and seven assists in just 26 games. Quickly adapting to the US-based league, Suárez has climbed to third place on the Golden Boot standings, largely contributing to Miami’s Supporters’ Shield victory.
Together, they are Unstoppable
The duo has combined forces for 35 of their team’s 73 goals this season, with Suarez’s pace and finishing quality complementing Messi’s ability to create chances. Speaking of which, they join other nominees like FC Cincinnati’s Luciano Acosta, Columbus Crew’s Cúcho Hernández and LA Galaxy’s Riqui Puig on the shortlist.

Awards up for Grabs
