Real Madrid Star Mesut Ozil Names Recommended Midfielder Arda Guler as Better Than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi
Mesut Ozil has caused a stir by declaring that Real Madrid’s 19-year-old midfielder Arda Guler is better than his former teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The retired German player, a FIFA World Cup winner, has been a long-time admirer of Guler’s talent and believes he has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.
Guler joined Real Madrid last summer for an initial fee of €20 million, but has struggled to secure a regular spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup. He has started just seven games for the Spanish giants, with three of those coming in the current 2024/25 season. However, Guler’s stock has soared at international level, where he was a key creative force behind Turkey’s surprise run to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, backed by an incredible seven goals and three assists.
The 19-year-old has been injured for some time now, but Ozil, who won two La Liga titles and a Champions League trophy with Real Madrid, believes Guler has the potential to become one of the world’s best. Guler has been an established member of the Turkish national team, recording an incredible 66% winning percentage in 15 appearances, providing four assists, and scoring three goals.
When asked who he thought was better between Ronaldo and Messi, Ozil took a bold stance, naming Guler, an unconventional choice. "When asked who is better, Messi or Ronaldo, I’ll give you a name. I hope to God he stays away from the evil eye, Arda Guler," Ozil said. This isn’t the first time Ozil has praised Guler, labeling him the best ‘number 10’ in Turkey during his time at Istanbul Basaksehir.
