Messi Leads Inter Miami Closer to the Top Spot
Inter Miami is one step closer to securing the number one seed in the MLS Cup playoffs, thanks in part to Lionel Messi’s latest heroics. The Argentine superstar scored the equalizing goal in the 67th minute, leading Inter Miami to a thrilling 1-1 draw against Charlotte FC.
Messi’s 15th goal in 16 league matches this season was the icing on the cake for Inter Miami, who now have an eight-point cushion over Columbus for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. With three matches remaining, Inter Miami is looking good to secure the top seed in the East.
The win would also see Inter Miami break the MLS single-season points record, currently held by New England, who set the bar at 73 points in 2021. Inter Miami still has a shot at beating that record, and it’s all down to how they perform in their final three matches.
One thing is for certain, however – Inter Miami will open the playoffs at home, and they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with. Messi’s goal was typical of his brilliance, taking on four defenders before threading the ball into the net.
The match saw both teams create chances, with Charlotte FC taking the lead just before halftime through Karol Swiderski. Inter Miami pushed hard for a winner, with Messi having two great opportunities in the final minutes. However, it wasn’t to be, and the two teams had to settle for a point apiece.
Despite the draw, Inter Miami’s unbeaten streak in MLS play stretches to eight matches, with their last loss coming back in June. They’ll look to keep that streak going in their next match, against Columbus, who will be looking to narrow the gap.
The Stats:
- Inter Miami now has 65 points, with three matches remaining.
- Columbus has 57 points, with four matches remaining.
- Inter Miami’s next three matches: at Columbus, at Toronto, and home to New England.
- Inter Miami will open the playoffs at home.
