Ballon d’Or Snub: Messi and Ronaldo Left Out for the First Time Since 2003
The biggest snub in football history has just occurred, folks! Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the two most dominant players of their generation, have been left off the list of nominees for this year’s Ballon d’Or award. This marks the first time neither of these superstars has been nominated since 2003.
The list of 30 nominees is packed with some of the best players in the world, including Vinicius Junior, Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane. These players have all had incredible seasons, with Haaland leading the Premier League in goals scored and Kane doing the same for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
But what about Messi and Ronaldo? The Argentine maestro is still working his way back from injury with Inter Miami, while Ronaldo has been struggling to find his form at Manchester United. It’s clear that the voters have looked beyond their impressive resumes and focused on the players who have been consistently performing at the highest level.
On the women’s side, five U.S. stars have made the list of nominees, including Lindsey Horan, Alyssa Naeher, Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson. These players have all had an incredible year, helping the Americans win the 2024 Olympic gold medal in women’s soccer.
The Spanish Connection
The Spanish national team has dominated the women’s game in recent years, and it’s no surprise to see five of their players nominated for the award. Aitana Bonmatí, Mariona Caldentey, Patricia Guijarro, Salma Paralluelo, and Alexia Putellas are all deserving of their place on the list.
England’s Hopefuls
England’s Lauren Hemp, Lauren James, and Lucy Bronze are also in the running for the award. The Lionesses had a disappointing World Cup campaign, but these players have all had impressive seasons with their clubs.
