Lionel Messi Has No Plans to Hang Up His International Boots Just Yet
The Argentina icon has been in scintillating form throughout the Copa America, scoring crucial goals and leading his team to the final. But amidst all the excitement, fans are naturally wondering when Messi will decide to call it a day on the international stage.
The 37-year-old, who has won the Ballon d’Or a record-breaking eight times, has no intention of quitting anytime soon. In fact, he wants to continue playing for Argentina "day by day" without worrying about what the future holds.
"I intend to continue. I intend to keep living day by day without thinking about what will come in the future or whether I’ll continue or not," Messi said in a recent interview. "It’s something I just live each day. I’m 37 years old, and only God knows when the end will be."
It’s music to the ears of Argentine fans, who have witnessed their beloved star go from strength to strength over the years. With Messi leading the charge, Argentina have finally won the World Cup (in 2022) and are now poised to lift the Copa America title.
Speaking of which, Argentina will face either Colombia or Uruguay in the final. Whichever team they face, it will be a special moment for one Argentine legend – Angel Di Maria. The 36-year-old winger has announced his intention to retire from international football after this tournament, bringing an end to a remarkable 16-year career.
Di Maria has been an integral part of Argentina’s success, playing in four of their five games so far. He’s expected to join his boyhood club Rosario Central once the tournament is over, ending a 14-year stint in Europe with Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain.
"Today, I’m not ready for my last game in the national team, but it’s time. Whatever happens in the final, I think I can leave through the front door," Di Maria said. "I gave everything. I always gave my life for this shirt. There were times when I didn’t get to, but lately, I have. I am grateful to everyone who supported me."
It’s been an incredible journey for Di Maria, who left Rosario Central at the age of 19 to join Portuguese side Benfica. Little did he know that he would one day return to his boyhood club to conclude his illustrious international career.
