Messi Leads the Charge as Inter Miami Claims First-Ever Supporters’ Shield
In a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Columbus Crew, Inter Miami CF secured the first piece of silverware in their young history, clinching the Supporters’ Shield with an impressive 68 points from 32 games. Lionel Messi, the Argentine sensation, scored two goals on the night, cementing his status as the leader of the Herons.
"We took charge from the beginning, and we’re happy to secure the first objective," Messi said in a post-game interview. "At the beginning of the year, we knew that this was a group to fight for this." His strike partner, Luis Suárez, chipped in with another goal, while keeper Drake Callender saved a crucial penalty kick to seal the three points.
The Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best overall record in the regular season, marks a significant milestone in Inter Miami’s relatively short history. The franchise has risen meteorically this season, thanks in no small part to the talents of Messi and Suárez. The duo have accounted for 35 of the team’s 72 goals in 31 matches, showcasing their incredible synergy on the pitch.
Messi’s Impact:
Despite missing several games due to injury and international duty, Messi has still managed to make a huge impact on the team. He leads Inter Miami in both assists and goals, with an incredible 16 games played.
"This year, we arrived with the idea to be protagonist and chase the ball, have the ball, and possession," Messi added. "Important players arrived to grow the team in terms of the game and personality. We try to compete in every game."
The 2024 Supporters’ Shield is Messi’s second trophy with the team, and his 46th career title. A list of accolades that includes 10 LaLiga trophies, four Champions League triumphs, two Copa América titles, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, among many others.
A Star-Studded Squad:
The team’s success this season is not solely due to Messi’s brilliance, however. The arrival of coach Gerardo Martino and stars like Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Suárez have all contributed to the team’s growth.
"I’ve been here one year, and I’m happy that we’ve been able to win two titles with him," Martino said. "The squad has shown great consistency throughout the season, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved."
Record-Breaking Potential:
With two games left to play, Inter Miami still has the opportunity to break the league record for most points in a regular season, currently held by the New England Revolution’s 73 points in the 2021 season. If they can achieve this feat, it would cement their status as one of the greatest teams in MLS history.
What’s Next:
As Inter Miami celebrates their Supporters’ Shield triumph, they can look forward to a first-ever home-field advantage in the playoffs. The road to MLS Cup glory awaits, and with Messi at the helm, anything seems possible.
