Messi Returns to Training: The wait is almost over!
August 28, 2024
In a huge boost for Inter Miami CF and their fans, Lionel Messi has finally returned to group training with the club, nearly six weeks after he was forced to leave the Copa América final with a badly sprained right ankle.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has been undergoing intense rehab and treatment every day, is still unlikely to feature for the club in the upcoming games, but according to coach Gerardo Martino, he should be back in time for the MLS playoffs.
Inter Miami’s impressive run this season, which sees them with the best record in the league, will be boosted significantly by Messi’s return. The Argentine sensation has already racked up 12 goals and 13 assists in 12 MLS games, and his presence will undoubtedly send a wave of confidence through the team.
"I know he’s been getting treatment every single day, training every single day," Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender said after Wednesday’s workout. "To see him on the field is great. It shows the quality of care we have here and it’s going to be huge when he finally gets back on the pitch."
However, with no official timetable announced for Messi’s return, fans will have to continue waiting for his return to the field. If he doesn’t feature against Chicago this weekend, he’ll have an additional two weeks to continue his rehabilitation before making his comeback.
What’s more, Messi has been excluded from Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers, a decision that might raise some eyebrows, given his importance to the team. Nevertheless, for Inter Miami and their supporters, the news of Messi’s return to training is a massive positive, and fans will be eagerly anticipating his first appearance in nearly two months.
