Messi to Join Argentina for World Cup Qualifiers, Martino Confirms
Lionel Messi is set to join the Argentina national team for their October international window, with Inter Miami head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino confirming the news. The star forward has been slowly regaining his rhythm after missing the September international window due to a right ankle injury.
Messi last played for Argentina during the 2024 Copa América, where he played a key role in the team’s trophy-winning campaign. His return to the national team comes as Argentina prepares to face Venezuela and Bolivia in World Cup qualifiers.
The 38-year-old Messi has been making steady progress with Inter Miami, who are currently leading the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings. Despite his slow start, Martino believes Messi will be at his best for the MLS playoffs.
"Leo is going to get better and better as he adds 90 minutes," Martino said. "He needs a rhythm of competition, which gives me the idea that he is going to reach the playoffs very well because in addition to the games with us he has the games with the Argentinian national team."
Inter Miami’s position on the table has secured them a spot in the 2025 Concacaf Champions League, and they remain on course to break the MLS record for most points recorded in a single season.
The team can clinch the Supporters’ Shield with victories against Charlotte FC and Columbus Crew, or by securing eight points from their last four games. New England Revolution hold the current record with 73 points in 2021.
Martino is prioritizing the team’s three upcoming games, before the FIFA date, when some players will continue competing while others will have a week to recover.
"Obviously this week we are in a decisive position to try to be first overall," Martino said. "We will see how the games progress and what the needs are that we are having. It works well to prioritize the search for the objective first, especially because after these three games come the FIFA date."
