Akanji Blasts Arsenal’s "Clever and Dirty" Tactics in Manchester City Draw
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji has slammed Arsenal’s tactics in their 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium, accusing the Gunners of using "clever and dirty" methods to frustrate their opponents.
The Swiss international was left frustrated by Arsenal’s time-wasting and physical play, which he believes hindered City’s ability to control the game. "That’s what they’re looking for. Always when we play against them, that’s what they’re looking for – drama," Akanji said after the match.
Akanji’s comments come after City’s John Stones accused Arsenal of using "clever and dirty" tactics to disrupt their rhythm. The defender believes that Arsenal’s attempts to waste time and gain an advantage through physical play are a common tactic used by the Gunners.
"It’s up to the referee to control these situations," Akanji said. "But in the end, it’s hard to score against anyone who has 10 players with the goalkeeper in their own box. So we tried our best."
Akanji’s criticism of Arsenal’s tactics is not new, with City players often complaining about the Gunners’ physical play in previous matches. However, Akanji believes that City’s ability to adapt and overcome these challenges will ultimately prove decisive in their title bid.
"I don’t think there are many better than them at it," Akanji said. "But in the end, we always win the title and I don’t think it’s going to be different this year. It’s still early in the season, I think again, we’re going to win the league again, and we don’t focus too much on Arsenal."
Despite the draw, City remain top of the Premier League table, and Akanji believes that their title credentials will be proven over the course of the season. "We haven’t lost a game yet. We tried, especially in the second half with one man up, but it’s hard with 10 players defending in their own box," he said.
As City look to bounce back from this draw, Akanji’s comments serve as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead. However, with City’s talent and depth, it’s hard to see them being derailed by Arsenal’s tactics.
