Exclusive: Manchester United Insert Unusual Clause into Mason Greenwood’s Marseille Transfer
As we reported earlier, Manchester United are finally ready to offload struggling star Mason Greenwood, and it appears they’ve negotiated a unique stipulation in the deal that will allow them to benefit financially from Greenwood’s future moves.
Greenwood has long been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, following his arrest and charge for various offenses in 2022. United suspended him pending an internal investigation, which ultimately led to his departure from Old Trafford.
Now, it looks like Greenwood is on the verge of completing a permanent transfer to French giants Marseille. The 22-year-old winger spent last season on loan at Spanish club Getafe, where he impressed with 10 goals and six assists in 36 games.
Manchester United and Marseille have reportedly agreed to an initial fee of £23 million, with a further €4m in potential bonuses on top. But here’s the intriguing part: United will retain a 50% sell-on clause, which means they’ll earn half of whatever Marseille receive if they decide to offload Greenwood in the future.
Things get even more unusual, as per Ben Jacobs, United will have the option to buy additional percentages of Greenwood’s sell-on value at a later date. Yes, you read that right – the clause essentially allows United to increase their earnings from Greenwood’s potential future transfer sales.
This clause is unprecedented, to say the least. It’s unlikely we’ll see many clubs including such a provision in future transfer deals. But Manchester United are undoubtedly trying to maximize their returns from Greenwood, who was once touted as a star player but has struggled for form and fitness.
The Marseille transfer is still pending Greenwood’s approval, and there’s even a suggestion that the Mayor of Marseille’s city is opposed to signing the player. This could raise further questions about Greenwood’s future prospects in the French league.
