Man Utd release statement on Mason Greenwood following Marseille transfer

Manchester United Wave Goodbye to Troubled Forward Mason Greenwood

In a surprise move, Manchester United have confirmed that they have parted ways with troubled forward Mason Greenwood, with the 22-year-old Englishman making a permanent switch to French giants Marseille. The transfer comes after a tumultuous few years for Greenwood, who was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2022. Despite the charges being dropped due to lack of evidence, United’s decision to offload Greenwood suggests that the club have had enough of the drama surrounding him.

Greenwood had not played for United since January 2022, and the club had reportedly grown tired of his antics, including missing training sessions and not adhering to team rules. Despite this, United had kept him at the club, hoping that he would turn things around. However, after a dismal loan spell at Spanish side Getafe last season, United have finally decided to cut ties with Greenwood.

The transfer fee is reported to be around £26.6 million (€30m), which is a decent profit for United considering Greenwood’s market value had plummeted due to his off-field issues. Marseille, who have a reputation for taking chances on troubled players, have handed Greenwood a five-year contract, with the option to extend for a further year.

Greenwood’s departure from United marks the end of a difficult chapter in his career, and fans of the club will be breathing a sigh of relief. United have finally taken a stance against bad behaviour and have opted to focus on rebuilding their squad with players who are committed to the cause.

In a statement, United said: "Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer. The 22-year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019. We wish Mason all the best in his future career."

It’s unclear what the future holds for Greenwood at Marseille, but one thing is for sure – United have finally said goodbye to a player who has caused them nothing but headaches.
