The Forgotten Fati: How Ansu’s Career Has Unfolded Since Manchester United’s £85m Bid
It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since Manchester United reportedly threw a whopping £85 million at Barcelona to secure the services of teenage sensation Ansu Fati. Back then, the then-16-year-old was deemed one of Europe’s hottest prospects, and the Red Devils were eager to snare him from under the noses of their Premier League rivals.
Fast forward to the present, and things haven’t quite gone as planned for Fati. Despite his immense talent, the 21-year-old has struggled to find his footing at the Nou Camp, with injuries and loss of form rendering him almost invisible in the La Liga landscape.
The Slide Down the Rankings
The stats are stark. Last season, Fati turned out for Premier League strugglers Brighton and Hove Albion, mustering a paltry four goals in 30 appearances. This term, he’s failed to start a game for Barcelona, with injury woes and competition from star-studded teammates leaving him on the periphery of the action.
Worst still, Fati has also lost his footing for the Spanish national team, with his last appearance dating back to 2023. It’s a remarkable fall from grace for a player once touted as a potential superstar.
Is Flick the Saviour?
New Barcelona coach Hansi Flick appears to be willing to give Fati another chance, despite the youngster’s checkered past. Speaking to the press, Flick acknowledged Fati’s immense potential, stating: "Ansu on the first days was unbelievable. He was very fit, and he showed it on the pitch and in training… And now it is not good and we don’t have him here and in America, but we will help him come back stronger."
Only time will tell if Flick’s intervention can spark a revival for Fati, but with competition for places fierce and injuries a persistent issue, it’s a tall ask.
What Next for Fati?
It’s hard to predict the future for Fati, but one thing is clear: he needs to rekindle his mojo pronto. With his contract tying him to Barcelona until 2027, the chances of a January transfer may be slim, but he’ll need to make an impact if he’s to salvage his career.
