Manchester United Star Set for Shock Position Shifts Under Erik Ten Hag
In a bold move, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly planning to deploy one of his key players in two surprise new positions next season. According to sources, Lisandro Martinez could be asked to demonstrate his versatility by playing at left-back and defensive midfield on occasion.
The 26-year-old Argentine international has already impressed at centre-back, but with Victor Lindelof potentially on the move, United are in the market for another centre-half. Martinez’s ability to play in multiple positions could be a game-changer for the Red Devils, providing they can overcome his injury issues.
United were plagued by left-back problems last season, with Tyrell Malacia out for the whole campaign and Luke Shaw struggling for fitness. Martinez’s potential shift to left-back could provide a solution to this issue, while his defensive midfield skills could also be valuable in midfield.
The news comes as United continue to strengthen their squad, with Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro already arriving from Bologna and Lille respectively. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte is also a target, with a potential swap deal for Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries also being considered.
Despite finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, United’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City was enough to convince the club’s hierarchy to keep faith with Ten Hag. The Dutchman is not under pressure to finish in the top four, with the priority instead being the "considerable progression of the team".
