Man Utd fans stunned by clause included in deal to sell Mason Greenwood as Marseille transfer nears

Mason Greenwood’s Move to Marseille Sends Manchester United Fans into a Frenzy

Mason Greenwood’s imminent transfer to Marseille has left Manchester United fans stunned, but it’s not just the prospect of the talented striker playing for the French side that’s got everyone talking – it’s the astonishing 50 per cent sell-on clause included in the deal that’s really got tongues wagging.

The Premier League club will reportedly receive a whopping £26.6 million (€30m) for Greenwood, who will fly to France to undergo medical tests before signing a contract valid until 2029. It’s been a tumultuous journey for the 22-year-old attacker, who has been frozen out of the first team since his arrest and charge for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. After conducting their own internal investigation, United decided it was best for both parties if Greenwood continued his career elsewhere.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe, but United opted not to loan him out again, and instead, they negotiated a permanent deal with Marseille, coached by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. And it’s this 50 per cent sell-on clause that’s got United fans singing United’s praises.

According to The Telegraph, the clause entitles United to up to 50 per cent of the profits from any future sale of Greenwood. So, if Marseille sell Greenwood for £50m, they’d make a profit of £23.4m, and United would be entitled to 50 per cent of that profit – £11.7m. Fans are loving this development, with one commentor saying, "Omar Berrada and co, y’all are geniuses…", while another praised, "This is better anything the Glazers would have done."

But not everyone is happy about the deal. Some fans have questioned whether the 50 per cent sell-on clause is fair, considering Greenwood’s turbulent past and the club’s role in it. Still, with United getting a sizeable transfer fee and the potential for significant profit down the line, it’s hard to argue with the business sense behind this deal.
