Manchester United player Mason Greenwood was released on bail on Wednesday by police who questioned him on suspicion of rape and assault on a woman.

The 20-year-old striker, who had been in custody since he was arrested on Sunday, has been “released on bail pending further investigation”, Greater Manchester Police said.

United have said Greenwood “will not train or play for the club until further notice.”

Greenwood remained in police custody Tuesday as officers investigating an attack on a woman also began questioning him on suspicion of sexual assault and death threats.

The 20-year-old striker was initially arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault after police said they became aware of “images and videos on social media posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence”.

A court gave police until Wednesday to continue detaining Greenwood, who has not been charged and is now being questioned on further charges.

“Following investigations so far, he has been re-arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and death threats,” Greater Manchester Police said.

Greenwood, who has six goals this season, has a contract with United until 2025, but the club distanced himself from him on Sunday.

“Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind,” the club said on Tuesday. “As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train or play for the club until further notice.”

Greenwood has been removed from active squads in the FIFA 22 video game, Electronic Arts said.

There has been no comment from Greenwood or his representatives.
