A 26-year-old nurse was shot dead by a ward boy, who had been harassing her, in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district hospital, police said on Friday.

Following the incident, nursing staff at the hospital have gone to work, demanding increased security at the facility, an official said.

Nurse Neha Chandel was shot in the head at close range by ward boy Ritesh Shakya with a domestically made pistol in the ICU on Thursday night, Bhind Police Superintendent Shalendra Singh Chauhan told the Daily Mail. PTI news agency.

The defendant turned himself in to police after the shooting, he said, adding that the victim’s body was sent for autopsy.

According to police, Shakya, a father of four, wanted to marry the victim, whose marriage was arranged with another man.

Acquaintances of the dead have claimed that the accused had been pestering the victim to marry him for months, but she refused his offers.

Meanwhile, more than 100 nurses staged a sit-in at the district hospital demanding security, an official said.

District health and medical director Dr. Ajit Mishra said arrangements were being made to ensure patients were not inconvenienced by the protest.
