Liverpool’s Two ‘Priority’ January Signings Revealed as Arne Slot Looks to Strengthen Squad
The Reds’ summer transfer window was somewhat underwhelming, with few arrivals and even fewer departures. However, the January window is just around the corner, and reports suggest that Liverpool are gearing up to make some moves to strengthen their squad.
According to Football Insider, the two positions that will be Liverpool’s top priorities in January are a defensive midfielder and a left-sided centre-back. The need for a defensive midfielder is particularly pressing, given the lack of depth in that area.
Wataru Endo, who joined the Reds last season, has failed to impress and has only made one appearance this term. Speaking about Endo’s role in the team, manager Arne Slot recently said: "It is not always about him; it is also about the others." This suggests that Endo’s days at Anfield may be numbered, and a new midfielder will be brought in to fill the void.
Liverpool will also be on the lookout for a left-sided centre-back to provide competition and cover for captain Virgil van Dijk, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season. Even if van Dijk does sign an extension, the Reds will want to bring in another defender to learn from the experienced Dutchman.
The likes of Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa were touted as potential arrivals over the summer, but they ultimately remained at their respective clubs. Martin Zubimendi, a midfielder from Real Sociedad, was also linked with a move to Anfield, but he ultimately decided to stay with his boyhood club.
It’s clear that Liverpool will be busy in January, and fans will be eagerly awaiting the latest developments. Stay tuned to 90min for all the latest transfer news and updates from Anfield.
