Liverpool Set to Hijack Manchester United’s Bid for £70m Star Defender

Manchester United’s miserable start to the season has left fans wondering if Erik ten Hag is the right man for the job. And now, it seems that Liverpool are looking to capitalise on the Red Devils’ woes by hijacking their bid for a £70m star defender.

According to reports, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is being targeted by both Manchester United and Liverpool, with the Reds reportedly willing to splash the cash to bring the 22-year-old to Anfield. Branthwaite has been in impressive form for the Toffees, and his composure on the ball has caught the eye of many top clubs.

The defender’s future is uncertain, with his contract set to expire in 2025. And with Everton struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League, it’s no surprise that bigger clubs are circling.

But what sets Branthwaite apart from other young defenders is his relationship with Manchester United’s assistant manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy. The two worked together at PSV Eindhoven in 2022/23, and Van Nistelrooy has been vocal about his admiration for the young defender.

"He would speak to me about my body shape when defending and the importance of being side on, so that I am always ready to run back or be ready to press forward," Branthwaite revealed in an interview with the Times.

"He said if you don’t have the right body shape, you will get done because the Premier League is much faster. If they play it in behind and you are not side-on, the striker will already be gone."

Van Nistelrooy’s influence could be the deciding factor in Manchester United’s bid for Branthwaite, but Liverpool’s willingness to spend big could ultimately be the deciding factor.

Liverpool’s need for a new defender is clear, with Virgil van Dijk’s future still up in the air. And Branthwaite’s calm and composed style would be a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s high-pressing system.

With the January transfer window just around the corner, expect this story to develop quickly. Will Manchester United’s connection with Branthwaite be enough to seal the deal, or will Liverpool’s deep pockets ultimately win out?
