Liverpool Player Seething with Fury After Reds Sign Goalkeeper Competition: "It’s Like They’re Going in a Different Direction"
Published: September 9, 2024
A Liverpool player is clearly unhappy with the Anfield outfit’s summer signings, particularly the recruitment of Giorgi Mamardashvili. In a rare interview while on international duty, the Reds shot-stopper made his frustrations public.
"I’ve made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out," he said. "The club’s made that decision to get another goalkeeper, and from the outside looking in, it looks like they’ve made a decision to go in a different direction."
The player in question, Caoimhin Kelleher, is looking for regular game time but seems to believe the Reds are moving in the opposite direction. His remarks indicate a growing discontent with his situation at the club. It’s been a testing period for the Irish stopper, with Mamardashvili joining on a temporary basis for the upcoming campaign.
Kelleher started his career at Liverpool’s youth academy and made his first-team debut in 2019/20. Despite featuring 47 times for the club across all competitions, his game time has been limited to 15 league appearances.
"This summer’s signings didn’t make it any clearer that they’re happy to use me as backup," the goalkeeper said, highlighting the impact of the club’s new arrivals.
Statistics to Support Kelleher’s Claims:
- In the 2023/24 season, Caoimhin Kelleher made 10 league appearances, while the starting goalkeepers, Alisson Becker and Adrian, started in 33 and 19 matches, respectively.
- During the same period, Kelleher had just 21 minutes of first-team action outside the League Cup and the Champions League.
It appears the goalkeeping competition has put immense pressure on Kelleher’s position within the Liverpool squad. He seems more than willing to challenge his fate and move to another club in pursuit of a consistent starting role.
