Liverpool’s Transfer Business Still Has a Long Way to Go
Liverpool’s summer of change is far from over. As Arne Slot looks to continue his revolution at Anfield, a huge signing could still be on the horizon before the transfer deadline on Friday.
The Reds are finally set to seal their first summer signing, with Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili completing a medical with the club on Monday. While the 23-year-old will remain with Valencia for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, Slot’s side still needs significant reinforcements to bolster the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp.
Despite a promising start to the campaign, with six points from six thanks to victories against Ipswich Town and Brentford, Liverpool’s defense remains an area of concern. Speaking after their win over the Bees, Slot acknowledged the importance of adding to the squad, saying: "[It’s been] Positive for many reasons… but we still need to strengthen and improve."
According to respected insider Dave Ockop, a centre-back is high on the priority list. Several names have been linked to Liverpool, including Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, and Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni.
Of those, Guehi appears to be the most likely target, despite Newcastle United also being heavily linked with the England international. If the Magpies do secure Guehi’s signature, Liverpool may need to look elsewhere, with Ockop stating that the Reds remain interested in Anthony Gordon, who is currently plying his trade at Newcastle.
As the deadline looms, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Liverpool’s transfer business has only just begun. With a number of crucial positions still to be filled, we expect a flurry of activity in the coming days.
