Liverpool fans are buzzing after their team’s impressive 5-1 win over West Ham United in the Carabao Cup, and one of the main talking points is the selection dilemma faced by manager Arne Slot. The Dutch coach has a big decision to make when it comes to choosing between Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz on the left wing.

Gakpo, who started ahead of Diaz in the cup tie, was instrumental in Liverpool’s victory, scoring two goals and causing chaos for the West Ham defense. His performance has sparked debate among fans, with many believing that Slot has a major problem on his hands.

One Twitter user said: "Slot’s got a problem you know, Gakpo’s class from the left wing, but Diaz is in the form of his life in the same position." Another added: "I cannot believe we had Cody Gakpo playing in midfield and through the middle last season. He’s so clearly a left winger. He’s electric there."

Gakpo’s dominance on the left wing is undeniable, and it’s hard to see why Slot wouldn’t want to start him in this position. The Dutch winger has a unique skillset that allows him to beat defenders with ease and deliver quality crosses into the box. Diaz, on the other hand, has been excellent this season, but his game is more about speed and agility rather than traditional winger skills.

It’s not just fans who are calling for Gakpo to start on the left wing. Even Slot himself has praised the winger’s quality, saying: "But it was good to see that Cody has such a fantastic shot, and we have to bring him in those situations, but apart from that I think that 20 minutes before the end, 15 minutes before the end, he had a very important clearance in his own 18-yard box, so that’s what I like to see – the quality on the ball but the work rate without the ball."

Gakpo may not have started a league game this season, but his performance in the cup tie has surely put him in the frame for a start against Wolves on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how Slot chooses to line up his team, but one thing is for sure – Gakpo is pushing for a starting spot.
