Liverpool ‘eyeing incredible £140m transfer swoop’ that would stun the Premier League

Liverpool Eyeing £140m Defensive Swoop for Jarrad Branthwaite and Marc Guehi

As the Premier League season hits its stride, Liverpool are gearing up for a big-money January transfer window, with reports suggesting they’re keen on making a massive £140m move for two English centre-backs.

According to GiveMeSport, Liverpool are eyeing a potential deal for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Both players have been in excellent form this season, with Branthwaite particularly impressing at Goodison Park. The 21-year-old has already established himself as a key player for Frank Lampard’s side, and his pace, power, and defensive prowess would be a valuable addition to Jürgen Klopp’s squad.

Guehi, 22, has also been impressive for Palace, providing a much-needed boost to their defense. With just one year remaining on his contract, Liverpool may view him as a more realistic target than Branthwaite, who is tied down until 2027.

It’s reported that Liverpool would need to cough up around £70m for each player, but they may try to negotiate a lower price if Everton and Palace are struggling to avoid relegation. Manchester United were rebuffed in their bids for Branthwaite in the summer, with their highest offer worth around £45m plus add-ons.

Klopp’s side have made an excellent start to the season, sitting one point clear of Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table. Their defensive stability has been key to their success, but the return of injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip has highlighted the need for further reinforcements.

In the summer, Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus for just £10m, with Giorgi Mamardashvili joining the club in 2025. Reflecting on their summer transfer business, new head coach Arne Slot said: "We’re happy with the ones we signed because we already have a very strong team. Chiesa is someone who can help us for the short term, and Mamardashvili is one of the examples where this club did in the past very good that they look also at the future, long-term future of the club."
