Messi’s Chance to Redeem Himself: The FIFA Club World Cup Invitation for Inter Miami
The eternal debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has been ongoing for years, with the two superstars jostling for the title of the world’s best footballer. With Messi now playing for Inter Miami in the MLS, his opportunities to prove himself against the best have been limited. That’s all set to change, though, as the team has earned an invitation to participate in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Next summer, the tournament will take on a new format, with 32 teams competing, up from the usual six or seven. And, with the US hosting the event, a spot has opened up for one MLS team to take part. According to Kaveh Solhekol, Inter Miami has won the right to participate, thanks to their Supporters’ Shield victory in the regular season.
But What About Cristiano Ronaldo?
While this news is music to Messi’s ears, it’s not exactly great news for his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar won’t be participating in the tournament, and that’s a blow for football fans worldwide. We all know that CR7 would have jumped at the chance to rub shoulders with the best of the best.
The Draw
The draw for the competition is set to take place in December, and there’s just one spot left to be filled. The winner of South America’s 2024 Copa Libertadores final will be the final team invited to participate. Fingers crossed that Inter Miami can make a strong impression in the tournament, but it’s going to be tough going up against the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.
Messi’s Last Run-in With the Club World Cup
Messi last participated in the Club World Cup back in 2015, when Barcelona triumphed over River Plate in the final. He scored in that match, but it’ll be a different story this time around. With Inter Miami, he’ll be expected to lead by example and show the world that he still has what it takes.
