Lionel Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, with a record-breaking eight Ballon d’Or awards and numerous titles with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. But when it comes to the debate of who’s the true GOAT (Greatest of All Time), Messi surprisingly names Michael Jordan as his top pick.
A Legendary Rivalry
The Argentine superstar has often spoken about his admiration for the basketball legend, who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. Speaking to Argentine journalist Juan Pablo Varsky on the Clank podcast, Messi revealed that watching "The Last Dance" documentary about Jordan’s career brought him closer to understanding the basketball icon’s greatness.
"It seems to me, in terms of sports, he’s the greatest there is (…). But after having seen his series and getting to know a bit more about him, you know, ‘The Last Dance’, it just blows your mind, it’s a masterpiece, it’s impressive," Messi said.
A Unique Era of Greatness
Messi continued, "Well, that also brought me closer to him and to understand a bit more about who he was. It’s a pity that I couldn’t live through that era in person, because I would’ve loved it." His admiration for Jordan’s on-court success, as well as his enduring popularity and business ventures, is clear.
What Does This Mean for Soccer Fans?
While Messi’s comment might come as a shock to some, it’s essential to remember that the Argentine great is not dismissing his own accomplishments or the achievements of other soccer players. Instead, he’s recognizing the unique greatness of Jordan and the impact he had on his sport.
So, what does this mean for soccer fans? For one, it highlights the vast talent pool in both sports, and the many ways in which athletes can be celebrated for their achievements. It also reminds us that greatness can take many forms, whether on the soccer pitch or the basketball court.
