Argentina’s Scaloni Sympathizes with Uruguay’s Copa America Drama
Lionel Scaloni, the Argentina manager, has expressed his understanding of the emotional reactions of Uruguay players in the aftermath of the Copa America semifinal against Colombia. The incident saw Uruguay players, including Darwin Núñez and Ronald Araújo, climb into the stands and clash with Colombian fans.
Scaloni’s words come as a response to Marcelo Bielsa’s passionate defense of Uruguay’s players, who were involved in the melee. Bielsa placed the blame mostly on CONMEBOL and local organizers for the lack of security, citing the danger posed to family members of the players.
Scaloni, who has experienced similar situations himself, echoed Bielsa’s sentiments. "When we saw family members involved, we had to rush into the locker room," he recalled. "The images are bad. I don’t think you can blame them, seeing your family in the middle of the tumultuous situation which isn’t fair. It’s maddening. We need to see that."
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also expressed his understanding of the situation, stating that it’s natural for players to react when their family members are at risk. "It’s bad to see, it’s not something I’d encourage my teammates to do, but when you see your kids and wives at risk, it’s a normal reaction," he said.
Colombia midfielder Juan Fernando Quintero also showed compassion, urging fans to be respectful and not allow aggressive behavior to tarnish the game.
The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of players and fans in the final match between Argentina and Colombia. Scaloni emphasized the importance of sufficient security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As the teams prepare for the final, Argentina will be looking to contain the threat posed by Colombia playmaker James Rodríguez, who has contributed six assists during the tournament. Scaloni stressed the importance of team defense, stating that they will defend as a unit to stop Colombia’s attacks.
Argentina’s experience in previous finals, including their triumphs in the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup finals, will be crucial in helping them adapt to whatever transpires on the pitch.
