Mbappé Takes PSG to Task Over Unpaid Wages Worth €55m
Kylian Mbappé has made a bold move by referring his former club Paris Saint-Germain to UEFA and the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s legal commission over unpaid wages worth €55m. The French superstar, now plying his trade with Real Madrid, is seeking justice after PSG failed to pay him the agreed-upon amount.
According to reports, Mbappé is owed €55m, which includes a third of a signing bonus worth €36m, an "ethical bonus," and the last three months of his PSG contract. This is not the first time Mbappé has taken issue with PSG’s financial dealings, with his counsels putting the club on notice last June.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel’s legal commission has the power to impose a transfer ban on PSG if they fail to pay sums due to their players. Meanwhile, UEFA may withdraw PSG’s Club license for the 2024-2025 campaign if they fail to comply with the governing body’s rules regarding club licensing and financial viability.
PSG, however, argue that Mbappé’s wage arrears are justified by the "commitments" made by the player to renounce them in the event of a departure as a free agent at the end of his PSG contract. But with no agreement ratified between the two parties since 2023, Mbappé’s counsels are taking a firmer stance, reserving the right to bring the case to France’s labor court, the Prud’hommes, to request the payment of unpaid wages and compensation for moral harassment.
This saga highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in football’s financial dealings. As the beautiful game continues to grow in popularity and wealth, it’s essential that clubs and players alike are held to the highest standards of financial responsibility.
