Kylian Mbappe’s Family in Talks to Take Over French Club Stade Malherbe Caen
As Kylian Mbappe gets ready to take the stage at Real Madrid on Tuesday, July 16, there’s some exciting news brewing off the pitch. The 25-year-old superstar’s family is reportedly in advanced talks to take over a club he almost joined back in 2013 – Ligue 2 side Stade Malherbe Caen.
According to a report by French outlet Ouest-France, Mbappe’s family business, which involves his mother Fayza Lamari, is interested in acquiring a majority share in Caen’s ownership. This comes after American asset management firm Oaktree Capital Management informed the club’s minority shareholder that they would withdraw from the club’s ownership.
For those who might not know, Mbappe was on the verge of joining Caen in 2013 but the deal fell through when the club was relegated from Ligue 1. He eventually joined AS Monaco instead. This new development has raised eyebrows, with many wondering what might have been if Mbappe had joined Caen back then.
Speaking to French outlet Maville, Laurent Glaize, the head of youth recruitment at Caen in 2013, shared his recollections of scouting Mbappe at a young age. "At first, it was our Parisian network that called us," he said. "He assured us that he had seen a phenomenon. We sent our recruitment manager to Paris to see him play at Bondy. He confirmed, and then David Lasry went to see him. David didn’t usually get too excited. Then, he called me, he was crazy: ‘Laurent, I have the future Ballon d’Or in front of me!’"
Glaize’s words paint a vivid picture of just how special Mbappe was at such a young age. "Technically, he already knew how to do everything. He had incredible dribbles, and above all he did them quickly. He had the game intelligence of a 15-16 year old guy. He was still small and thin obviously, but the potential for athletic development was obvious. In my entire career, frankly, I’ve never seen anything like it."
While nothing has been officially confirmed, this potential takeover could be a game-changer for Caen. With Mbappe’s family involved, the club could attract more attention and investment. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
