Kyle Walker’s Future at Manchester City in Doubt – And There’s a Replacement Ready to Step In
Kyle Walker’s incredible seven-year stint at Manchester City has seen him become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s squad, helping the club win six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League. Despite still looking capable of playing at the elite level, Walker’s future at the Etihad Stadium is unclear. And, according to a recent report, Manchester City have identified a potential replacement in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.
Walker, now 34, was close to joining Bayern Munich last summer, but City managed to persuade him to stay and sign a new contract after Pep Guardiola went public with his desire to keep the defender. The full-back captained City to a record fourth successive Premier League title last season, producing performances that defied his age. However, his future looks uncertain, even though his contract doesn’t expire until 2026.
Recent reports have suggested that Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli are interested in signing the England international, and even went as far as to say that Walker had reached out to former City teammate Riyad Mahrez for advice about living in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, The Athletic reports that Manchester City have identified Frimpong as Walker’s replacement, should he end up leaving the club.
So, who is Jeremie Frimpong? The Netherlands international has enjoyed a superb 2023-24 season as Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists while largely operating as a right-sided midfielder. Frimpong came up through City’s youth ranks before joining Celtic in 2019 and then Leverkusen in 2021. He’s known for his pace, skill, and attacking flair, making him an exciting prospect to replace the experienced Walker.
While it’s difficult to predict what will happen to Walker, it’s clear that Manchester City are planning for the future. Speaking earlier this summer, Walker outlined his desire to keep playing at the top level for as long as possible, saying, "I’ll go as long as I can go. This is a job that I love. I never wake up and think I don’t want to go in. I love playing football. It’s my happy place."
