Mourinho Takes Credit for Spain’s Euro 2024 Win, Admits He Never Saw Carvajal’s True Potential
Jose Mourinho has added to the hype surrounding Spain’s historic Euro 2024 victory by claiming some credit for their win over England. However, in the same breath, he admitted that he never understood the true potential of one of Spain’s key players.
Speaking on Instagram, Mourinho praised three of his former Real Madrid players, Nacho Fernandez, Alvaro Morata, and Dani Carvajal, saying: "2024/ Champions League winner captain Nacho Fernandez/European Champion winner captain Alvaro Morata. Many congratulations to them and to the coach who gave them their debut when they were just kids in the academy."
He then added: "Same coach who did not understand that Dani Carvajal was another one! Many congratulations to Mister De La Fuente for an amazing job. Best team won!"
Morata and Nacho made their debuts under Mourinho during his time at Real Madrid, with Morata coming on as a substitute in December 2010 and Nacho earning his first start in a 6-3 win over Valencia a few months later. Carvajal, on the other hand, was part of the Real Madrid B team before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012.
The full-back has since gone on to achieve incredible success, lifting six Champions League titles and four La Liga titles with Real Madrid. Even Spain’s goalkeeper, Unai Simon, has hailed Carvajal as "the best right-back in the world" after an impressive campaign for both club and country.
"Mourinho didn’t see Carvajal’s potential when he was at Real Madrid, but the rest of the football world certainly did," said a pundit. "Carvajal has consistently shown himself to be one of the best right-backs in the world, and it’s surprising that Mourinho didn’t recognize his talent sooner."
