Jamie Carragher Names the Premier League Centre-Back Pairing Which Could Become the Greatest of All Time
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has made a bold claim, suggesting that Arsenal’s William Saliba and Gabriel could become the greatest centre-back pairing in Premier League history.
Writing for The Telegraph, Carragher argued that the duo is on the threshold of joining elite company, alongside legendary pairings such as Chelsea’s John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, and Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
However, Carragher pointed out that Arsenal must win a major trophy, such as the Premier League or Champions League, for Saliba and Gabriel to be regarded as one of the best centre-back pairings of all time.
The pundit believes that the duo has the potential to achieve greatness, citing their impressive defensive record and ability to play together seamlessly. "Provided they stay together, we will eventually reference Saliba and Gabriel in the same breath as the two stand-out partnerships of my generation," Carragher wrote.
But not everyone agrees with Carragher’s assessment. Some fans have argued that Arsenal’s impressive defensive record is due to the strength of the team rather than Saliba and Gabriel, while others have pointed out that Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and John Stones have achieved greater success together.
