Jamie Carragher Names His All-Time Liverpool XI, with Two Current Stars Making the Cut
Legendary Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has named his all-time greatest XI, and it’s packed with some of the most talented players to ever wear the Red jersey. Speaking on the latest episode of Sky Bet’s Stick to Football, Carragher picked just two current Liverpool stars for his dream team.
As you’d expect from the 46-year-old defender, his selection is peppered with a mix of old-school legends and his own personal favorites. Of course, Ray Clemence gets the nod as first-choice goalkeeper, edging out Alisson Becker on the basis of his Champions League-winning exploits.
Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Neal share the right-back berth. Carragher cites Neal’s incredible European Cup success, winning four titles during his time at Anfield. "When you think of players who have played for AC Milan and won the European Cup four of five times and we go ‘wow’, [same with] Real Madrid and Barcelona players – Neal won four European Cups – it’s unbelievable," he explained.
In central defense, the Liverpool great pairs Virgil van Dijk with the legendary Alan Hansen. His left-back choice, though, might raise a few eyebrows – Steve Nicol beats out Andy Robertson due to his impressive partnership with John Barnes in the late ’80s.
Upfront, Carragher names his all-time Liverpool XI without himself, surprisingly. The midfield trio consists of Steven Gerrard, Graeme Souness, and Ian Callaghan. Interestingly, Mo Salah makes it onto the right-wing berth, replacing Callaghan for his incredible goalscoring record.
Of course, no Liverpool XI would be complete without Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush in attack. "Rush did it for us in those cup finals against Everton – I was crying on the way home!" an emotional Carragher recalls.
So, what do you think of Carragher’s all-time Liverpool XI? Do you agree with his choices, or do you have your own favorites for the Reds’ dream team? Let us know!
