In a stunning twist, Ivan Toney’s future at Brentford has taken a dramatic turn, with the striker’s prospects of leaving the club this summer now hanging in the balance.
The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from the Bees, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both reportedly interested in his services. However, a serious injury to new signing Igor Thiago could now scupper Toney’s plans to depart.
Thiago, who joined Brentford from Club Brugge for a reported £10 million, suffered a meniscus injury during his debut appearance for the club against AFC Wimbledon. The Brazilian striker scored a brace in the 5-2 win, but is now set to undergo further scans to determine the extent of the injury.
A statement on the club’s official website revealed that Thiago will be unavailable for Brentford’s upcoming friendly against Benfica, and will have further tests next week to determine the severity of the injury.
Toney’s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, with the striker’s contract due to expire in 2025. While he has yet to commit to a new deal, Brentford are said to be eager to keep hold of their star striker, who has scored 72 goals in 141 appearances for the club.
The injury to Thiago, however, has thrown a wrench into the works. If the Brazilian is out for an extended period, Brentford will be left light up front, making it even more difficult for Toney to leave the club.
"We’re not looking to sell Ivan," a club source told 90min. "We know he’s a target for other clubs, but we’re confident we can keep him at the club. The injury to Igor has thrown a spanner in the works, but we’re hopeful we can get him back fit and playing soon."
For Toney, the injury to Thiago could be a blessing in disguise. If he can prove himself as a vital player for Brentford, the club may be more willing to offer him a new deal, or even a loan deal to a top-six club.
