In a shocking twist, Ivan Toney’s plans to join his childhood club, Liverpool, or his newly-developed admiration for Arsenal may be scuppered as Manchester United and Chelsea prepare to make late moves for the Brentford striker. But will their offers be enough to tempt Toney away from Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ahli, who are reportedly willing to shell out a whopping £400,000 per week in salary?
According to The Standard, United have launched talks with Brentford regarding a potential late summer transfer for Toney, while Sky Sports suggests that Chelsea have made an official bid for the England international. However, both Premier League sides may struggle to match the significant financial package being offered by Al-Ahli.
Toney, 28, has been in high demand following his impressive form for Brentford, which has seen him score 31 goals in 82 appearances. However, he has yet to make an appearance for the Bees this season, with Thomas Frank opting to leave him out of his first two Premier League squads.
In a revealing interview on the Diary Of A CEO podcast, Toney revealed his ideal transfer plans for the future, stating that when he does move, it will be to the "right" club. When asked by host Steven Bartlett if he meant Liverpool, Toney hesitated before admitting, "I have been a Liverpool fan my whole life, but I have liked Arsenal… I like watching Arsenal and how they play and kind of how passionate the fans are. But, yeah, Liverpool fan, Liverpool boy at heart."
Unfortunately for Toney, the two Premier League clubs that look the most likely to strike a deal with Brentford are Arsenal and Liverpool’s fierce rivals, Chelsea and Manchester United.
