MAN UNITED PLOT LATE HIGHS TO HIJACK CHELSEA’S IVAN TONEY PURSUIT
Manchester United have reportedly entered the fray to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney, as they look to steal the thunder from Chelsea’s long-term pursuit of the England international.
According to The Standard, United have initiated talks with Brentford over a late move for Toney, who has made it clear he wants to leave the Bees. Chelsea, however, are still the favorites to sign Toney, having made an official offer for the 28-year-old.
Toney’s preference for a move to Chelsea is well-documented, but the club’s ability to match his wage demands may be a major obstacle. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli are reportedly offering Toney a staggering £400,000 per week, which Brentford are unlikely to match.
Chelsea remain confident of securing Toney’s signature, with Victor Osimhen being their primary target. The Blues are set to continue talks with Napoli over the Nigerian striker, with Toney seen as a back-up option.
With Toney’s contract running down, Brentford may have to accept a reduced fee to avoid losing him for nothing next summer. United, meanwhile, are in the market for a new striker and may be willing to meet Brentford’s demands to get a deal done before the transfer deadline.
This could be a major coup for United, who have already made four signings this summer. They’re set to complete the £42.3m signing of midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain, and may yet add more talent to their squad before the window closes.
With the deadline looming, it’s clear that United are prepared to make a late push to hijack Chelsea’s move for Toney. Whether they’ll be successful remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure – this is going to be an exciting end to the transfer window.
