New Delhi:

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of Congress today broke her silence on Amarinder Singh’s former government in Punjab, saying it was “changed” because “it was run by the BJP from the Centre”. Without naming Mr. Singh, a longtime Gandhi family loyalist, Ms. Gandhi Vadra said: “We knew something was wrong. So we changed the leadership.”

“We have Charanjit Singh Channi, who is one of you. He knows and feels your problems,” the senior Congress leader added, while campaigning in Kotkapura city in Faridkot district on Tuesday.

This is the first time that the Gandhi brothers, who always supported Navjot Sidhu during his rebellion against Singh, have broken their silence on the changing of the guard in Punjab.

Singh stepped down from the top job in September last year. Later, he formed his own party, the “Punjab Lok Congress”, and participates in state elections in alliance with the BJP.

In his unrestricted resignation letter, Singh had made a number of accusations against the Gandhis.

The former chief minister, associated with Congress for almost four decades, had said that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, instead of controlling Navjot Sidhu, “an unstable individual” and “an acolyte of the deep state of Pakistan”, had sponsored him. .

Sonia Gandhi, she said, had “turned a blind eye” to the “antics of this gentleman who was aided and abetted by the Secretary General in charge Harish Rawat, perhaps the most dubious person I had the opportunity to meet (sic)” .

Invoking Rajiv Gandhi, he wrote that he has been “deeply hurt by his conduct and that of his children whom I still deeply love as much as my own children, having known their father, since we were at school together since 1954. .” .

The Gandhis had not responded to the accusations at the time. Nor had Mr. Sidhu been nominated as a candidate for Chief Minister of Punjab. Last week, Channi was named as a candidate after receiving people’s comments on the matter through a telephone poll.
