What is postural hypotension?
According to Dr. Bhupesh Kumar, Neurologist, Neuro Pain and Care Clinic, Gurgaon, “Postural hypotension or orthostatic hypotension is basically a form of medical condition where the patient’s blood pressure drops suddenly. It can result in a sudden loss of consciousness. Therefore, patients may fall, have a fainting fit (syncope), or experience dizziness or lightheadedness.”
It takes time for patients to come to their senses after collapsing due to postural hypotension, Dr. Kumar said. indianexpress.com.
“When you are sitting or lying down and suddenly get up from your position, your blood pressure can drop suddenly, leading to postural hypotension,” he added.
However, postural hypotension is rare and should not be a cause for concern, he said. But, if someone experiences it regularly, immediate medical intervention is required to determine the possible causes.
In such cases, possible reasons such as an existing heart condition, hypoglycemia, dehydration, low sodium levels, etc. are considered by doctors. “If the patient is taking some type of medication specifically for the heart, they can also induce postural hypotension,” the expert stressed.
If it happens in a crowded environment, you need to make sure the patient is getting enough air. “It is not necessary to crowd around the patient when he collapses because the condition will worsen if the environment is congested.”
Dr. Kumar suggested the need to consult doctors immediately in case of postural hypotension to effectively rule out possible causes.
