Ilkay Gundogan, the German midfielder, has reportedly asked to leave Barcelona before the transfer window closes, with two clubs leading the chase for his signature.
According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Gundogan has expressed his desire to depart the Camp Nou, citing a lack of playing time as a major factor. The 33-year-old midfielder has entered the final year of his contract, and it seems unlikely that he will extend his stay with the Blaugrana.
Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are the two clubs said to be interested in signing Gundogan. Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek is believed to be a big fan of the midfielder, and the Turkish club are willing to do whatever it takes to bring him on board.
Fenerbahce, managed by Jose Mourinho, are also keeping a close eye on Gundogan’s situation. The Portuguese tactician has assured that if the operation is feasible, his club will do everything possible to close the deal. However, Fenerbahce’s failure to qualify for the Champions League could scupper a potential transfer.
It’s no secret that Gundogan has been struggling for playing time under Barcelona manager Xavi. The German midfielder has made just 51 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign at the club. With the arrival of new players, it seems unlikely that his situation will improve.
Gundogan enjoyed a glittering career at Manchester City, winning five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and two League Cups. He also lifted the Champions League trophy during the 2022-23 season. However, despite winning three major trophies, the midfielder decided to leave the Etihad for a new challenge in Spain.
The Spanish giants were reportedly unwilling to meet Gundogan’s contract demands, which ultimately led to his departure. According to a report, Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, regretted Gundogan’s decision to leave.
The midfielder’s parents are Turkish, and a move to the Turkish Super League could be a fitting switch for Gundogan. Clubs in Saudi Arabia are also monitoring his situation, but it seems unlikely that he will make a move to the Middle East.
