Wrexham’s Revamped Lineup: Can Phil Parkinson’s New-Look Side Succeed in League One?
Wrexham’s meteoric rise from the National League to League One has been nothing short of astonishing. The Welsh club’s historic back-to-back promotions have set the stage for an exciting new chapter in their history. However, with several big names dropped from the starting XI, Phil Parkinson’s side will look very different this season.
The arrival of new faces like Arthur Okonkwo, Lewis Brunt, and George Dobson has injected fresh blood into the squad. Okonkwo’s permanent deal from Arsenal is a significant coup, while Brunt and Dobson’s signings from Leicester City and Charlton Athletic respectively, bring a wealth of experience.
Parkinson’s tactics have also undergone a transformation. The manager’s decision to switch to a traditional back four in Wrexham’s 4-1 friendly win against Hanley Town suggests he’s looking to make the most of his new signings. Luke Bolton could be the new right-back, with George Evans and Brunt forming a solid centre-back partnership. Youngster Sebastian Revan could be handed the left-back spot.
In midfield, Parkinson’s diamond formation could see Dobson at the base, with Elliott Lee on the left and Andy Cannon on the right. Ryan Barnett could complete the midfield quartet, with Jack Marriott and Paul Mullin leading the attack once the latter recovers from his back issue.
This new-look lineup would see stars like James McClean, Ollie Palmer, and Steven Fletcher drop to the bench. While it’s understandable that Parkinson wants to freshen up his side, it’s unclear whether this new lineup can replicate the success of their promotion-winning season.
Wrexham’s Potential New Lineup:
Okonkwo; Bolton, Evans, Brunt, Revan; Cannon, Dobson, Lee, Barnett; Marriott, Mullin.
