How to know what your skin type is?

According to dermatologist Roberto Oviedo, we have mixed, oily, dry, sensitive or very rare skin, which are those that do not have much dehydration or much oil on the face.

How to recognize oily skin?

“If we wash our faces in the morning, wait about 30 minutes and observe that all our skin, on our face, begins to break out or to have oiliness and shine, then we are facing oily skin,” says the doctor.

How to recognize combination skin?

“If the T zone, that is to say the forehead, nose and chin, begins to present this excess or this production of fat and rather the cheeks tend to dry out, we would be facing combination skin”, he points out.

How to recognize dry skin?

“If our entire face dries out, loses shine, has texture and there is scaling or straps, we are facing dry skin,” he adds.

How to recognize sensitive skin?

“If rather our skin has a slightly abnormal red, which increases especially in sun exposure or our skin does not support any type of substance, products, assets, whether they are dermatological cosmetics or makeup, then we are dealing with sensitive skin,” he concludes.

How is the skin classified, according to phototype?

Oviedo specifies that the skin, according to the phototypes, is divided into six classifications: 1 and 2 is for whiter people, 5 or 6 for brown people, and 3 and 4 for the rest of the variants, including Latinos. Regarding the impact, it is also uneven. “1 is skin that does not tan despite extensive sun exposure, but it does burn, it shows redness,” says the doctor. Detail that “a phototype 5 or 6 does tan, but does not burn”. “On 3 and 4 many times you can tan and also present redness, those burns during exposure to the sun”, precisely.

How to protect my skin?

The dermatologist Roberto Oviedo highlights all the steps to follow to protect our skin.

  • We should basically use sunscreen, with a protection factor of around 30 or more, and try to reapply it every three to four hours in general.
  • Another of the measures of protection and care of the skin is also the hydration of two liters daily.
  • Cleanliness is also basic in skin care. should be done delicately with detergent-free products.
  • Consuming antioxidants that come in fruits and vegetables will make our skin more resistant to the different daily aggressors, be it radiation and pollution.

How to expose ourselves to the sun for our skin?

  • Do not expose ourselves to the sun directly between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Using physical means of protection: umbrella, wide-brimmed hat (minimum 8 cm in circumference), suitable clothing (the thicker the better), sunglasses and, if possible, the UV-protective clothing that is already sold in different colors.
  • Use sunscreen, with a protection factor of around 30 or more.

However, the doctor urges not to hide from the sun all day because it “produces vitamin D, improves bone density and helps to properly absorb calcium.” In addition, he asks that we avoid self-medication, especially if it is advice that comes from people unprepared for skin treatment.
