My Footgolf Debut: A Humbling Experience
I’ll never forget the moment I realized that footgolf isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I was on my hands and knees, fetching my ball from the water after a disastrous kick. Welcome to my first professional tournament debut at the English Footgolf Open!
The event took place over three days in August, featuring 153 players from 19 countries, including Argentina, the United States, and Australia. I was fortunate enough to secure a spot in the major, but my experience was a far cry from what I expected.
As a Sunday League player, I teamed up with Piero Menor, a top-ranked player who has played all over the world. We competed in the pairs tournament, and despite my initial struggles, we managed to finish 31st out of 34 teams with a gross score of 76.
The pressure was on during our final round, and I felt like I was taking a last-minute penalty in a cup final. But with Piero’s guidance, I composed myself and tapped the ball into the hole with precision. It was a brilliant birdie, and we celebrated our finish with a hug.
While I didn’t win any cash prizes, I gained valuable experience and insights from the pros. Ben Clarke, the world’s number one ranked player, even gave me a masterclass on the practice course. Matias Perrone, a top-ranked player from Argentina, also shared his expertise.
My footgolf journey has just begun, and I’m eager to take on the big guns in the future. With more practice, I’ll be ready to compete against the best. Who knows, maybe one day footgolf will be an Olympic sport, and I’ll be the one representing my country.
