Ronaldo Takes Aim at Ten Hag: "He Knows the Club"
Cristiano Ronaldo has fired a scathing shot at Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, suggesting the Dutchman’s attitude is all wrong for the Red Devils. The Portuguese superstar made his feelings known in an interview with Rio Ferdinand, in which he slammed Ten Hag’s comments about the team’s Premier League and Champions League prospects.
United have struggled to get going this season, picking up just three points from their first three matches. The pressure is mounting, and Ronaldo believes Ten Hag needs to take advice from someone who knows the club inside out – Ruud van Nistelrooy, the five-time league title winner.
"Manchester needs to rebuild everything," Ronaldo said. "The coach says they can’t compete to win the League and Champions League. As Manchester United coach, you can’t say that you’re not going to fight to win the League or Champions League."
Ronaldo also praised van Nistelrooy, who he believes can help Ten Hag turn things around. "If Ten Hag listens to Ruud, maybe he can (help himself)," he said. "I think it can help a lot because he knows the club and the club should listen to the guys who were there. You or Roy Keane or Paul Scholes or Gary Neville, whatever, Sir Alex Ferguson. You can’t rebuild a club without knowledge."
Ronaldo’s comments come as no surprise, given his complicated history with Ten Hag. The pair clashed during their time together at United, and Ronaldo eventually left the club on a free transfer in late 2022.
Despite the tough start to the season, Ten Hag has the backing of the club’s hierarchy, who believe he can turn things around. But Ronaldo’s words may add to the pressure on the manager, who will be looking to turn things around when United face Southampton on Saturday.
