Gary O’Neil speaks out as Wolves’ Daniel Podence sent off for punching Como player in racism row

Wolves Manager Hits Out at “Unacceptable” Racial Abuse Incidents

As the world fights against racism on and off the pitch, Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has responded to this week’s pre-season friendly vs Como, marred by appalling racial abuse from an unnamed Como player. With the incident sparked by a remark from one of these players towards their South Korean goal-scorer Hwang Hee-chan, many are pointing fingers at poor refereeing and a lack of protocol in dealing with such situations.

“In the 2nd half, we did have this incident,” began O’Neill. “Channy heard an unacceptable remark made by [the Como player],” he confessed. “Chany was really saddened by this action, was keen that I take responsibility for this difficult moment – but we cannot let unacceptable actions take centre stage so we chose an alternative.”
“Channing was concerned about his participation in what happened. Even though no one expected we would address the matter more seriously later, the matter affected the remainder of the match and a lot players and fans around the earth are left pondering its significance.”
Como, the hosts, backed coach Cesc Fabregas are set off for a strong display in Serie. The Como board has accepted responsibility for that incident for their own position.
