Gareth Southgate Lands New Role in Football After Stepping Down as England Manager

Just weeks after announcing his departure from the England national team, Gareth Southgate has already secured a new role in football. The 53-year-old, who stepped down as England manager following their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, has been appointed as a technical observer for UEFA.

In this new role, Southgate will analyze games from a coaching perspective, helping UEFA spot new trends in football to improve coaching education. He’ll be working alongside other experienced coaches, including Fabio Capello, Avram Grant, and Frank de Boer, who have all taken part in the project.

So, what does the role involve? Southgate and his fellow technical observers will compile reports on each game, using video and data to illustrate technical and tactical features. They’ll also have access to multiple camera angles, including broadcast images, tactical footage, and behind-goals footage, which can be injected into the report.

This isn’t Southgate’s first rodeo with UEFA, either. He previously worked as a technical director for the organization, contributing to a report for last season’s Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Former Everton and Wigan boss Roberto Martínez, an experienced club competition technical observer, has previously explained the job. "Instead of just watching the game for a specific reason – in my capacity as a national team coach – you are watching it in a more holistic way and appreciating the development of the game and the competition itself," he said. "It could be different types of performance – from young players, for example – or the way the competition getting tougher physically and cuter tactically with the new trends within the competition."

Southgate’s appointment is a significant one, and it’s a testament to his experience and expertise in the game. As a technical observer, he’ll be able to share his knowledge and insights with UEFA, helping to shape the future of the sport.
