The Rise of Jack Nunn: From Hellenic League to Serie A
Patrick Williams, the founder of Bristol Inner City Football Academy, has witnessed some remarkable journeys in his two decades of coaching. But even he can’t believe the incredible story of Jack Nunn, a talented young midfielder who has gone from playing amateur football to joining Serie A giants Cagliari.
Three months ago, Jack was featuring for Mangotsfield United in a Gloucestershire County Cup final against Cheltenham Saracens. Fast forward to today, and he’s rubbing shoulders with the likes of Yerry Mina in the picturesque city of Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia.
It’s a remarkable turn of events that even Jack can’t fully comprehend. "I still had a bit of hope, but there was definitely a part of me that thought, ‘I’ve got to start thinking about something else,’" he admits. Yet, the 18-year-old has been given a new lease of life after a scout’s unexpected message on Instagram changed everything.
The Journey So Far
Born and raised in Bristol, Jack’s passion for football was evident from an early age. However, he faced rejection twice during trials at Exeter and Bristol City, respectively. Disheartened but not defeated, Jack continued to hone his skills, playing regularly for Stoke Gifford in the Gloucestershire County League.
Last year, Jack participated in the Roma Caput Mundi, a prestigious tournament featuring national youth teams from across Europe. Although he didn’t make the initial cut, his perseverance paid off as he was selected for England Colleges. In a surreal experience, Jack faced the likes of Juventus and Roma in the competition, a taste of the big-time that would stay with him.
The Italian Adventure
After an impressive run in the Roma Caput Mundi, Jack received an invite to trial with Cagliari’s Primavera squad. In a whirlwind tour of the CRAI Sport Center training facility, Jack impressed the coaching staff with his technical ability, earning a two-year deal with the Serie A club.
A New Chapter Awaits
As Jack pens his name on a professional contract, he’s quick to acknowledge the importance of his family’s support. "My dad is very grounded. He always told me that even if the worst happens, I’ll come back with a tan and a story to tell," he laughs.
For Patrick Williams, Jack’s success is a testament to the academy’s ability to nurture talent. "I won’t try and get emotional about this, but I love seeing young people be successful in their lives, whether it’s football or elsewhere," he says.
What’s Next?
With Jack set to feature for Cagliari’s Primavera squad, fans can expect to see the talented midfielder take on some of the best young talent from across Europe. Will he rise to the occasion and prove himself in the top division? Only time will tell.
